ENVIROSCADA SMAC - Street Light Monitoring and Control

Evolve your city to the next level.
With smart lighting, you can keep the streets safe while lowering your costs. Smart traffic signals help to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
Using thorough warning systems, you can keep floods at bay.

Advantages

SMAC, a solution for monitoring street lights, is an example of eMaintenance.
Users can remotely monitor and handle maintenance from several locations with eMaintenance.

Flood monitoring is used to prevent/deter floods by monitoring water levels and activities.
If water levels reach dangerous levels, the system notifies management personnel by SMS, and the siren and beacon are activated.
This enables for fast intervention and flood control.

Maintenance provides an unrivalled level of transparency, efficiency, and availability.
It supplements and oversees traditional maintenance operations that rely on manual inspections and tests on a regular basis.

The following are some of the key solutions offered by SMAC via eMaintenance:

eMaintenance for street (and traffic) lights.

  • Fast response to failures
  • Reduce downtime and complaints.
  • Ensure that all asset and facilities are working at all times.

Immediate alerts with remote ELCB reset feature.

  • Immediately turn street lights back on when they are affected by lightning. This ensures that street lights are working at all times for improved road safety for all road users.

Monitoring of electricity use, power supply stability, and other parameters 24 hours a day, seven days a week, by SMS.

  • Receive alerts before road users and drivers complain.
  • Utility manpower is used efficiently to attend to other vital concerns.

Consolidated monitoring for all sites on one screen.

  • Efficient and transparent maintenance management for all the road assets and facilities.

Challenges

• Circuit breakers can be tripped by lightning.
• When the breakers fail, there is no warning system.
• It could be days or weeks before someone notices that the lights have gone out.
• Criminals may take advantage of unlit regions.
• The hours of sunrise and sunset vary throughout the year.
• It is costly to alter the timing of turning on and off lights when using standard time.
• As a result, electricity is used inefficiently.
• The conventional method to identify and rectify the failure is time consuming and expensive. i.e Light bulb fuses
• Light bulbs fuse from time to time. Again, it is difficult and costly to check them periodically.

The ENVIROSCADA SMAC Solution

  • The goal of SMAC is to create a more efficient and effective technique of street light and other public lighting facility maintenance.
  • SMAC uses the internet to send out fast alerts when lights go off, as well as energy usage profiles to help with energy saving.
  • The SMAC system gives clients the ability to understand their street lighting usage behavior. Also, check light status in precise detail, with ease, and in real time.
  • Provides a breakdown of streetlight feeder pillars -This monitors the status of the feeder, and informs the client to any unauthorized feeder access.
ENVIROSCADA STREET LIGHTING MONITORING;
  • Provides insight into consumption patterns
  • Reduction of light failures
  • Counteract traffic congestion
  • Contribute to road safety
ENVIROSCADA CLOUD PLATFORM PROVIDES;
  • High transparency
  • Precise data
  • Low capex
  • Real-time updates
  • Data exports
  • Trending data graphics

The ENVIROSCADA platform provides users a solution that will give the overview of streetlight feeder pillars. This helps monitor the energy consumption, the status of the feeder, and alerts the client to any unauthorized access to the feeder.

ENVIROSCADA SMAC Architecture

SMAC comprises of 3 layer advance solutions to provide the maximum value to the customers whilst still guaranteeing the solution’s dynamism and energy efficiency.

Layer 1: ENVIROSCADA monitoring.

ENVIROSCADA monitors and provide remote control output points for the site. This allows users:

  • To know that the sites are functioning as normal
  • To detect defective light bulbs
  • To obtain data for energy efficiency measures

When faults or events occur, the ENVIROSCADA central server automatically delivers alerts to specified and configured recipients for quick response and action.
The advantages are as follows:

  • Reduced down time
  • Saves man-power to check on sites.

When faults or events occur, the ENVIROSCADA central server sends out automatic alerts to designated and configured recipients for fast response and action. The benefits are:

  • Reduced down time
  • Saves man-power to check on sites.
Layer 2: Manage the tripping of ELCBs due to lightning strikes

This layer deploys an approved Surge Protection Device (SPD), with typical ratings of 80kA but can be increased to 200kA if so required. ENVIROSCADA shall provide an alert for the SPD to be replaced if damage occurs.

Layer 3: Onsite ELCB deployment.

The intelligent capabilities of ELCB allows for the following tasks:

  • Filter out noise from surges to avoid nuisance tripping
  • Maintain safety level to prevent electrocution.
  • Input for remote reset when used with ENVIROSCADA

Success Stories

Due to its IoT based platform, the ENVIROSCADA SMAC solution does not require expensive software or licensing fees. Instead, it operates on an annual monitoring and maintenance fee that also includes a guarantee for the SMAC equipment. Additionally, SMAC is able to accurately provide lamp status without requiring individual lamp monitoring sensors, leading to a great reduction in the cost for the system.

In this case, the SMAC solution was able to be deployed at over 1,200 feeder pillars. Each feeder pillar will provide power to an average of 50 lamps.

Customer (City Council)
